Types of Baby Bottles

1. Standard

This is the simplest form of baby bottles with no bells or whistles. You have a nipple attached to a bottle. Some standard bottles also come with a cover that covers the nipple.

These bottles are also sometimes called straight-neck bottles. They are cheap, can be found anywhere, and commonly used for babies.

2. Angled

Angled baby bottles are also called angle-neck bottles. They consist of an appropriate bend in the neck of the bottle to keep a continuous flow of milk through the nipple. Angled bottles also help prevent bubbles from forming in the nipple, thus baby swallows minimal air.

3. Wide-Neck

Wide-neck baby bottles are wider than most standard and angled bottles. Both the bottle and nipple are wider to provide a more natural feel of your own nipple. Most babies find a sense of satisfaction in wide-neck bottles.

4. Vented

A vent in the baby bottle prevents bubbles from forming and mixing with the milk. These bottles are often vented from the nipple, a valve at the base, or by use of a straw. Vented bottles are recommended for babies who suffer from colic and gas after feeding.

5. Disposable

Disposable bottles are the ideal choice when taking your baby on a recreational trip. These bottles benefit mothers when they cannot clean their regular bottles on the spot.

Things to Consider when Choosing a Baby Bottle

Besides the obvious main factor of price, the other things you must consider when shopping for baby bottles is material, type, flow, size, and age range.

Material – Silicone or Latex nipples are the most recommended ones as they are firmer and hold their original shape for longer periods. When it comes to bottles, you can select the best choice from glass, plastic, stainless steel, or a hybrid where a glass bottle is featured inside a silicone or plastic sleeve.

Plastic baby bottles are the most commonly used because of their unbreakable characteristics but they become cloudy over time. However, make sure your baby isn’t allergic to any material used in the nipple as well as the bottle.

Size – It is another important factor as both nipples and bottles are available in a variety of sizes to provide a flow speed according to your baby’s needs.

There are various nipples available for babies with facial or oral issues due to which they cannot suck. For newborn babies, start with 4-ounce bottles and you can dramatically increase the size to 8-9 ounce over a course of 4 to 5 months.

Shape – Both nipples and bottles come in various shapes, each used for a different purpose. You can choose from a variety of nipple choices including flat-topped, orthodontic, traditional, natural shaped, etc.

Make sure to buy various nipples to determine which one satisfies your baby’s needs.  As we described above, there are different types of baby bottles available on the market i.e. wide-neck, standard, disposable, vented, and angled.

Using Baby Bottles Effectively

Though 45 degrees is the best angle to adjust the bottle and feed your baby, the crook of your arm plays an important role for your baby to get comfortable during feeding.

The bottle must not be held too flat as this can cause bubbles and air to mix with the milk. Lift it a bit higher so the milk slowly drains for effective feeding. To avoid potential air problems, it is recommended to use a vented baby bottle.

Considering all the have further, you are ready to start testing different nipples and bottles to find a perfect match for your baby. Babies often become more comfortable with each use of a bottle.
