Mini cribs are compact, and most of the time, portable; these two features save your bedroom from becoming too messy. Furthermore, some models of mini cribs are fordable and can also be taken apart when you are no longer using a mini crib or for trans-portability, as well. If your family travels a lot, then a mini crib is something that you need for your child’s comfortable and safe sleeping.

Additionally, mini cribs can assist your child for up to two years; however, the transitioning period for each child to a toddler bed is different from the other. When you notice that your baby has gotten too big for the crib, no longer sleeps comfortably inside it, and climbs out of the crib without any resistance, it means that he’s now ready for a toddler bed.

The design features of mini cribs are a lot similar to traditional cribs. Mini cribs also com with storage features, such as a changing table that enables you to change your baby’s diaper without moving him to another place. Furthermore, a storage compartment on the changing tables allows you to store your baby’s essential items nearby, such as diapers, wipes, lotion, tissues, etc.

Additionally, some convertible mini cribs also come with conversion kits help you convert the mini crib into a toddler bed when your child has outgrown the crib is ready for this transition. If the conversion kit doesn’t come with the mini crib, you should buy in separately when you purchase the mini crib. Doing this will save you from any inconvenience in case that mini crib is discontinued, and the conversion kit is no longer available in the market.

Mini crib essentials

Despite the model of a mini crib, there are some necessities without which a mini crib is incomplete, such as:

Since mini cribs are small in size, they require crib mattresses. Some mini cribs come with mattresses, whereas for others you have to purchase them separately. Make sure that the mattress dimensions are correct, and the mattress fits inside the crib perfectly. Furthermore, there should be any gap between the edge of the crib mattress and the frame of the mini crib. These gaps are a safety hazard, and your parts of your baby’s body can get trapped or stuck in these gaps.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, children should use mattresses that are firm and not too soft because the cushioning of a mattress can cause suffocation. Furthermore, the weight of the baby can presses the mattress inwards and its side outwards, which can be a cause of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Additionally, your child is going to spend most of his time inside the crib, up to 16 hours; this is why you need a firm crib mattress that is manufactured from chemical-free and non-toxic materials. Crib mattresses typically come in three different types:

Foam mattress

A foam mattress doesn’t cost much and is incredibly lightweight. These features make foam mattresses a common choice as well as easy to maneuver while changing the sheets of the crib mattress.

Innerspring mattress

An innerspring mattress consists of about 80 to 200 spring coils inside the mattress. Make sure to check out the position and count of the coils in a crib mattress before purchasing it. Furthermore, if there is a large number of coils inside a spring mattress, then it is likely to be firmer than a spring mattress with fewer coils. Since we need firm mattresses for children, you should purchase a mattress with more coils.

Organic mattress

As the name suggests, organic mattresses use organic cotton in their manufacturing, which is free from synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Additionally, organic mattresses are ideal if you want to avoid off-gassing, which is a common issue with foam mattresses.

Bedding Accessories

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should avoid using any bedding accessories, such as pillows, stuffed animals, toys, blankets, and crib bumpers. While you might think that these things will make your baby more comfortable, but that is not the case. All these soft bedding items are a safety hazard for your children and can be a cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Therefore, you must keep your mini crib free from such items and dress your kid in warm clothes instead of using a blanket when it is cold.

Furthermore, use fitted sheets and keep them clean at all times. Fitted corners of a sheet will help keep the sheet securely into one place and won’t leave any loose spots. Additionally, make sure that the fitted sheet you purchase fits your crib mattress correctly and is designed specifically for it. In addition to that, experts recommend buying at least three fitted sheets since you will need to wash them every day, and you will always have an extra fitted sheet available.

Safety first

The safety of their children is the first and foremost concern of every parent. Similarly, while using mini cribs, you need to make sure that your child is sleeping in a safe environment. Here are some safety precautions that you need to follow while setting up and using your mini crib:

  • Drop-side cribs are safety hazards and no longer available in the market after the 2011’s update of federal safety standards. Also, we would recommend you not to purchase mini cribs that were manufactured before 2012.
  • A mini crib should not have cutouts, knobs, or any other decorative feature on the top of its corner posts. They can hurt children and also snag their clothing.
  • The gaps between a crib’s slots shouldn’t be wider than a soda can. Make sure that the slats are not too wide to prevent your baby’s head from injury.
  • Frequently check for loose and broken screws and other fittings that hold a crib together. Doing this can save you from accidents and injuries.
  • The crib mattress should fit inside the mini crib perfectly and shouldn’t leave any gaps. The gap between a crib mattress’s edge and the frame of the crib should be no more than a half-inch. Furthermore, the tight-fitting of the crib mattress won’t leave any gaps for your kid to get tuck or injure himself.
