Overview

Introduction

Your baby has been “drumming” since he or she began moving – banging on the table, banging on the chair, banging on the floor, banging on pots and pans with utensils. Banging on objects is a natural, joyful learning process for baby. But, how do you know when it is time for real (toy) drums and how do you know which one is best?

First, let’s talk about how musical training has a positive effect on brain development. Music is not simply noise. The National Center for Biotechnology Information recommends promoting instrumental training in early childhood because it enhances achievement in other areas such as verbal skills, learning a second language, non-verbal reasoning, and general intelligence (source).

Playing an instrument at an early age encourages children in creative self-expression and can aid in helping them begin to develop an identity. While it sometimes simply sounds like noise, keep in mind that other than the positive psychological effects, children learn fine motor skills, enhance attention span, and begin to learn how to work with others for a positive outcome.

The New South Wales (NSW) Board of Education lists the following reasons children should study music at an early age:

  • Children learn there are rewards for hard work and discipline.
  • Helps children become active listeners.
  • Teaches children to embrace cultures different than their own.
  • Music allows children to explore emotions, which may help them cope with problems in a more positive way.

Music plays a positive role in enhancing a child’s natural ability to learn. Music also offers emotional support during good and troubled times as well as helping to promote healthy emotional management. The earlier a child begins to experience music, the better an affect it can have on developing classroom skills, social skills, and building confidence to create a successful person.

If you think about it, music is such a huge part of our lives that we rely on it to help us emotionally and socially. In social situations, such as parties and dances, we learn to communicate and interact with people with music in the background. When we are sad, music plays a role in soothing us. Relaxing music played at bedtime helps baby to relax and fall asleep. Music is all around us – let your child become a part of it.

My recommendation is to encourage that noise. What better way to learn than with a drum set? So, let’s have a look at a few options that are available before they are ready for a professional drum set.

The Effects of Music on Children

Music has many positive effects on children. Because of these positive effects, we believe all children should be introduced to music at an early age – before they go to school. In many cases, music is considered therapy – music soothes us during troubled times and is used to celebrate good times.

Music can also help children learn to control their emotions. Researchers have connected healthy emotional management with fewer negative emotional outbursts, more empathetic children, socially competent children, and academic achievement on a higher level.

Music also enhances the part of the brain that is used for learning languages. Children exposed to music at an early age learn to talk earlier and have an easier time learning a second language. Children exposed to music and/or music lessons at an early age have shown more confidence in classroom and social situations, often have higher test scores, and learn early in life that hard work has rewards.

Whether you choose drums or other instruments – or a combination of instruments – it is important to introduce your child to music at an early age to enhance their natural learning capabilities.

Final Thoughts

In choosing what I feel is the best drum set for children, I considered the following: age recommendation, authenticity, features than might enhance a child’s interest in the drum set, and features that enhance a child’s learning. Children learn every second of the day. Toys that are fun and enhance learning are wonderful tools for parents to have.

With these qualities in mind, I feel the best good, cheap drum set that enhances learning and gives children an authentic drum experience is the Best Choice Products Kids Electronic Drum Set. This drum set includes left and right snare drums, bass drum, cymbal, and a working microphone.

Background music and lights provide stimulation for the child and offer hours of learning and fun while developing motor skills that will last a lifetime. The drum set offers five background music choices and four different sound effects.

Two of the features that I like most are the working microphone and the volume control capabilities. The volume control feature allows you to teach social skills such as considering other people in the household. Learning to play the drums along with the provided music will build confidence, show children the rewards of working hard and how dedicated practice can help improve skills.

Most of all, the drum set is brightly colored and filled with fun effects that will keep your child engaged and interested in learning about music. The seat, the bass drum with pedal, and the microphone give children a real feeling of authenticity where they can imitate drummers from their favorite music videos.

For parents, my favorite feature (that I have already mentioned) is the ability to adjust the volume. While we want our children to learn and understand that being noisy is a part of childhood, there are times when banging loudly on a drum is just not what we want to hear – especially if it has been going on all day!

While all of these cheap drum sets have many of the same features and teaching capabilities, the Best Choice Products Kids Electronic Drum Set provides authenticity that activates your child’s imagination and makes him/her feel like a rock star.
